Be Creative! Chelan Library's Summer Reading Program is About to Begin!

The Summer Reading Program begins at the Chelan Library on Friday, June 12th, and librarians, volunteers, parents and children can hardly wait! This year’s theme, “Be Creative,” is sure to inspire readers to use their imaginations and creativity as they keep reading and literacy skills sharp throughout the summer.

Librarians Gloria Groves and Barbara Soltess have been working hard to make sure this year’s program is incredibly fun and entertaining by collecting prizes, scheduling events and preparing materials in anticipation of a great turnout. The Summer Reading Program’s numbers are expected to be even higher than last year.

Students at Morgan Owings Elementary will see a presentation on the Summer Reading Program on June 12th – the last day of school – and are encouraged to visit the library following the release of school to sign up for the program. Readers may sign up at any point during the program, but are encouraged to register early in order to earn more prizes.

For every two hours of reading completed, students get to choose a small prize from a variety of toys and games.

Attendees to the Summer Reading Program events will have a chance to win a prize in the weekly drawings for larger prizes, which will be awarded at the end of each event. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing, but kids won’t want to miss the exciting activities planned! (See schedule below.)

On August 19th, the library will host an “End of Program Party” for all participants at 3:00 p.m. During the party, a Grand Prize drawing will be held. Dedicated readers will earn multiple entries for the Grand Prize drawing by accumulating hours of reading during the program. Again, winners must be present at the time of the drawing.

The library is currently seeking volunteers to help with the Summer Reading Program, and has several positions available for volunteers who would like to “verify” reading hours by listening to young readers share the stories they have read. Interested parties should contact the library to apply.

With so many great events and prizes to enjoy, readers are sure to want to “Be Creative” this summer! For more information on the Summer Reading Program or to get a copy of the calendar of summer events, contact the library at 509-682-5131 or by email at chelan@ncrl.org.
